 History of Garden Magazines

Horticulture, "the branch of plant agriculture dealing with garden crops, generally fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants." Gardening magazines fall under this category, showing you different ways of growing crops and ornamental plants in magazines. The first garden magazine was The Gardener's Magazine done by John Cladius in 1826. This magazine's first periodical was devoted exclusively to horticultural subjects. This magazine became the universal means of communication among gardeners. It gave great pleasure to amateur gardeners and inspired people to pursue gardening, in many who had been indifferent to it.     The Gardener's Magazine is the inspiration for the first American garden magazine. Charles Mason Hovey, is a nurseryman, writer, and editor from Cambridge. He massed published an early American garden journal called Magazine of Horticulture. Hovey wrote his magazine so his, subscribers could read the latest news in horticulture. The Magazine of Horticulture became the longest-running nineteenth-century garden magazine in America and was an early example of our dependence on England for garden inspiration.
